- Supplemental Information
- The layer has been derived from the Figure 28 "Sightings of large marine vertebrates in the Adriatic Sea recorded during the aerial surveys in 2010 and 2013" of the Publication "UNEP-MAP-RAC/SPA. 2015. Adriatic Sea: Important areas for conservation of cetaceans, sea turtles and giant devil rays. By Holcer, D ; Fortuna, C.M and Mackelworth, P.C. Ed. RAC/SPA, Tunis. 69 pp.", (accessed online from http://www.rac-spa.org/sites/default/files/doc_open_seas/adriatic_sea_cetaceans_turtles_rays_abnj.pdf).
The Figure 28 was georeferenced using the software QGIS 2.14 and the points representing the sightings were digitised. Then a grid 20x20 km2 was recreated and the number of sightings were calculated per each cell and assigned to the field "count", creating as an output a polygonal vector shapefile.
This map contains only giant ray devils represented in the figure 28 above mentioned, so excluding all marine mammals and C. Caretta.
